PPGI vs PPGL: Understanding Color-Coated Steel Coil Differences

PPGI (pre-painted galvanized iron/steel) and PPGL (pre-painted galvalume/aluzinc) are the two dominant color-coated steel products used in roofing, wall cladding, and appliance manufacturing. While they appear similar in finished form, the substrate difference between zinc-coated and aluminum-zinc-coated steel drives significant differences in corrosion performance, heat reflectivity, and cost. This article explains what procurement buyers need to know.

Substrate Differences: Galvanized vs Galvalume

PPGI uses a hot-dip galvanized steel substrate. The zinc coating is essentially pure zinc with minor additions, providing cathodic protection at cut edges and scratches. Standard zinc coating weights range from Z60 to Z275 g/m².

PPGL uses a 55% aluminum, 43.4% zinc, and 1.6% silicon coating (commonly known as Galvalume or Aluzinc). The aluminum in the coating forms a stable, adherent aluminum oxide barrier that resists corrosion differently from pure zinc. The zinc component provides some cut-edge protection, though less than a pure zinc coating of equivalent thickness. Standard coating designations are AZ70, AZ100, AZ150, and AZ185 (total both sides in g/m²).

For the same coating thickness, galvalume typically outperforms galvanized in continuous atmospheric exposure but provides less sacrificial protection at cut edges. This trade-off affects specification decisions for different building components.

Corrosion Resistance Performance

In standardized salt spray testing (ASTM B117), galvalume substrates show 2–4 times longer time to red rust compared to galvanized substrates of equivalent coating mass. In real-world atmospheric exposure, particularly in rural and moderate industrial environments, galvalume consistently outperforms galvanized for roof and wall panels.

However, galvanized performs comparably or better in highly alkaline environments (pH above 9), such as contact with fresh concrete or certain industrial chemicals. Galvanized also provides better protection at sheared edges and punched holes because zinc's sacrificial action extends further from the cut than the Al-Zn coating.

For coastal marine environments with high chloride exposure, neither bare metallic coating is adequate alone — the color coating system (primer + topcoat) becomes the primary corrosion barrier regardless of substrate.

Heat Reflectivity and Thermal Performance

Galvalume's aluminum-rich surface provides higher solar reflectance than galvanized, contributing to lower roof surface temperatures. This property has made PPGL popular for "cool roof" applications in tropical and subtropical climates. Some studies report 5–10°C lower peak roof temperatures for galvalume-based panels compared to galvanized under the same solar load.

For unconditioned buildings and warehouses, this thermal difference can reduce internal temperatures and improve occupant comfort without mechanical cooling. The economics of this benefit depend on local climate and energy costs.

Paint Adhesion and Coating System Compatibility

Both substrates accept the same range of paint systems (polyester, SMP, PVDF). Surface pre-treatment before painting — typically a chromate or chrome-free conversion coating — ensures adhesion regardless of substrate type. In standardized bend and impact tests, properly pre-treated PPGI and PPGL panels show comparable paint adhesion performance.

One practical difference: galvalume substrates tend to develop a thin aluminum oxide film on cut edges that provides natural passivation. This can be an advantage in humid environments where condensation might otherwise cause edge rust on galvanized panels before installation.

Cost Comparison

PPGL typically carries a 5–10% premium over PPGI of equivalent steel grade and paint system, reflecting the higher cost of the Al-Zn coating raw materials. For large roofing projects covering thousands of square meters, this premium can be significant. Many buyers in cost-sensitive markets default to PPGI for standard applications and specify PPGL only where the thermal or corrosion advantages justify the premium.

Application Recommendations

  • PPGI (galvanized substrate): Interior wall panels, ceiling panels, general-purpose cladding in moderate environments, roll-formed profiles where edge protection matters, and applications in alkaline environments.
  • PPGL (galvalume substrate): Exposed roofing in tropical/high-UV climates, cool-roof applications, marine-environment buildings (with appropriate paint system), and applications where bare cut-edge exposure is minimized by design or installation practice.

Both products serve the same core function — prepainted steel coil for roll-forming into finished building components. The substrate choice should be driven by the project's corrosion environment, thermal requirements, and budget.
